Pretoria - Unconfirmed reports that two people have been killed during protest action in Hammanskraal have been doing the rounds on social media.

Pictures circulated on Monday of three buses being set alight in the embattled area, while several posts on Twitter have now suggested that two people have allegedly died, one of which was burnt to death.

Former Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee tweeted two pictures of the supposed bodies, stating: “Horror pics coming in from Hammanskraal. Red Ants being attacked. Saw a pic of someone set on fire.

Abramjee then tweeted the City of Tshwane to plead for an “urgent intervention”.

Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa responded, tweeting back: “@Abramjee Good afternoon. @TMPDSafety is already there. Thank you for your efforts.”

Tshwane metro police officials could not be reached at the time of publishing to confirm the two alleged deaths.

Buses were burnt and cars apparently stoned earlier on Monday morning, News24 reported.

Community members began protesting over the removal of shacks that were illegally erected in an area near the Jubilee Mall, police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi told News24.

Moremi could not confirm rumours circulating on social media that the Red Ants security guards were dispatched to the area, although video clips on Twitter by @RamsOfhie show people clad in bright red outfits being driven on the back of trucks.
