A scrapyard in the suburb of Ottawa in Durban went up in flames on Friday.

According to Reaction Unit, they received the call at 13:56 from an employee at Mandos Used Spares requesting assistance after they noticed smoke emanating from a storage yard next to the main building.

"Smoke from the fire could be seen for several kilometres," said Reaction Unit of the fire.

"Upon arrival Reaction Officers found several vehicles engulfed in flames. 

"Officers evacuated employees from the business as the fire spread rapidly through the property."

Firefighters are on the scene and are battling the blaze.

Circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire has not been established at this stage.
