2016-04-25 11:22

Durban - High drama brought the streets of Dalton to a standstill on Monday morning as police officers chased a gang of business robbers along the roof of a factory.

The robbers are understood to have broken through a perimeter wall and then the wall of a warehouse, and carted out goods all night.

Workers disturbed them on Monday morning and raised the alarm as several robbers fled to the roof of the factory to hide.

A police source, who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, said the gang had stolen various items.

"These guys managed to break through the wall on Sydney Road and then they bust through the wall of the warehouse itself. They were stealing everything they could lay their hands on and they had hours to do the work," he said.

"They got onto the roof to try and gain access to another office. When people started reporting for duty this morning, we think they were interrupted and the police were called. Some of the men fled, but three of them were trapped on the roof."

The source added that the eThekwini Metro Fire Department was called to help, and they used their Bronto-Skylift to hoist Dog Unit officers and their K9’s onto the warehouse roof.

With nowhere left to run or hide, the men were arrested and dragged down to waiting police vehicles.

Official police spokespersons said the matter had not yet reflected on their systems.
