Cape Town - Nine people, including a two-year-old child, have sustained serious injuries after a head-on collision on Main Road in Muizenberg, paramedics say.

An overloaded car with 7 people, which included the child, inside collided with a second car at around 04:00 on Saturday morning, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

The overloaded car overturned several times.

"The child as well as some of the adults were ejected from the vehicle during the collision," Vermaak said.

Both cars were severely damaged in the accident.

Two adults were found in the other vehicle, and had to be freed from their vehicle using the hydraulic rescue equipment.

Three people were in a critical condition, while the other six were in serious conditions.

All injured were transported to Victoria and Groote Schuur Hospitals, he said.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
