Pietermaritzburg – Three people died when the vehicle in which they were travelling crashed into a river in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

The vehicle was found in a small river at the bottom of an embankment off Greyling Road.

According to ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, paramedics arrived at the scene and first found two people with minor injuries sitting outside the vehicle. They were later told three other people had also been travelling in the vehicle when the accident happened.

“The surrounding area was searched by paramedics and SAPS for the missing patients,” Meiring said.

Meiring said after an extensive search, "the bodies of the three other occupants – a woman and two men – were found, but they had succumbed to their injuries".

The two patients were treated and transported to Northdale Hospital.

Initial reports have indicated that the driver lost control of the vehicle.
