Johannesburg - A person was arrested when a temporary Pikitup worker was stabbed while collecting rubbish in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on Saturday night, Gauteng police said.

A group, alleged to be striking Pikitup workers, attacked the temporary workers and damaged a truck, Major Mack Mngomezulu said on Sunday.

A worker was stabbed. The group were also throwing bricks at the temporary workers.

Mngomezulu said no shots were fired during the incident. A case has been opened and the person arrested was expected in court on Tuesday.

The truck suffered damage estimated at R15 000, he said.

The City of Johannesburg on its Twitter page said nine of its trucks were attacked while collecting refuse in the township.

According to the city, two people were arrested.

Just before midnight on Wednesday, two Pikitup trucks were shot at on Rand Show Road near Nasrec, Soweto causing them to collide.

"The drivers of the trucks, which were deployed to collect waste amidst the ongoing illegal work stoppage by the waste management entity's workers, fled the scene during the shooting," the City of Johannesburg said on Thursday.

Security personnel, who were escorting the trucks, called for help.

"A group of other temporary workers who were on the trucks at the time were left in a state of shock," according to the city.

No one was hurt during the incident.
