Johannesburg – Police brought a protest in Pimville, Soweto, against the installation of prepaid electricity meters under control on Monday.

"The situation is calm now. The police managed to clear the road as soon as they arrived on the scene, just after 8 o'clock this morning", police spokesperson Captain Hitler Ngwenya said.

About 50 Pimville residents had blocked Modjadji Road with burning tyres, forcing Eskom employees to abandon their meter installations for the day.

About 20 protesters were still on the scene, but everything was under control, he said.
