'We can get on with our lives now' - Reeva's father talks after Oscar Pistorius's murder conviction

2015-12-03 11:41

Speaking from Reeva Steenkamp's hometown of Port Elizabeth, her father Barry Steenkamp spoke after Oscar Pistorius was convicted of murder.WATCH

Johannesburg - Oscar Pistorius's family on Thursday said it noted the Supreme Court of Appeal's decision to replace his culpable homicide conviction with murder.

"The legal team will study the finding and we will be guided by them in terms of options going forward," the family said in a statement.

"We will not be commenting any further at this stage."

The SCA replaced Pistorius’s culpable homicide conviction with murder, ruling that he should have foreseen the deadly impact his four bullets would have in a small bathroom.

The matter was referred back to the High Court in Pretoria to deal with sentencing.

The SCA’s ruling comes almost three years after Pistorius shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, later stating he mistook her for an intruder. He fired four shots into the bathroom door of his Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

After a gruelling trial in the North Gauteng High Court, Judge Thokozile Masipa found him guilty of culpable homicide and not murder.
