Cape Town – A volunteer firefighter died in George on Friday morning after helping to put out wildfires in Plettenberg Bay, Netwerk24 reported.

Bradley Richards, 24, was admitted to George Mediclinic after suffering serious injuries while trying to douse the fires.

Another firefighter, Ian Barnard, who also sustained serious injuries while fighting the same fire, was admitted to hospital in George.

Charlene Theron of Firstcare Wildfire Support said the wind had changed direction while the two firefighters were fighting the blaze.

She said they had jumped into the fire truck, but it wouldn’t start. "They had to then run to get away. They are both fit men, but such a fire can spread very fast."

Theron was emotional when she spoke about how the fire reached him. Barnard turned around to try and save Richards when he also burnt.

He suffered burn wounds to his face, hands and legs.

Eden Lions Club said on their Facebook page: "It tears us apart that a young hero, Brad Richards, was taken from us this morning. At 24, this man will not be forgotten and will always have his name held high as someone who gave his life to protect our lives and our homes."
