Pietermaritzburg - A 30-year-old man who has been described as a “prominent Pietermaritzburg guru” appeared briefly in the magistrate’s court on Tuesday in connection with a charge of rape.

The man, who is from the Northdale area, is charged with the rape of an 18-year-old girl.

The incident allegedly occurred on July 2.

He was not asked to plead to the charge and the case was adjourned until July 12 for a formal bail hearing.

State prosecutor Thandeka Mkhize said the state is currently opposed to the man’s release on bail as the police have to verify the safety of the alleged victim and other witnesses.

Defence lawyer Wade Paul from Siva Chetty & Company said the man has offered to relocate to the Durban area. However, police still have to check on the address he has provided.

Members of the guru’s family who attended court yesterday did not want to make any public statements concerning the case at this stage.

The Witness reported yesterday that the guru was regarded by the alleged victim as a close family friend and spiritual guide.
