It took three weeks of secretive meetings and dance rehearsals that led to a spectacular flashmob proposal at the Liberty Midlands Mall on Wednesday.Chrissun Phillips got down on one knee in front of hundreds of holiday shoppers and proposed to his girlfriend of six years, Candice Pillay. This was after a flashmob, consisting of professional dancers from Body Rock and about 30 of his family and friends, danced in the centre court of the mall. Pillay was caught unawares as she stood among the crowd of people thinking it was a stunt by the mall management as part of the festive season. The six-and-a-half-minute dance routine, which ended with the proposal, was caught on camera and can be viewed on The Witness Facebook page. Phillips described his girlfriend as shy and one who “doesn’t like to be the centre of attention”. “So I wanted her to be the centre of attention for the first time and decided to propose in front of everyone,” he said. He said he told Pillay to meet him at Liberty Midlands Mall for waffles, but instead she was met with a dance mob in the centre of the mall. “I was so excited when she said yes. This is the most exciting time in our lives and it was a major step for us,” he said. Phillips said he met with six professional dancers from dance school Body Rock, who trained his family and friends to join the mob. The dancers each had a mask over their face so Pillay would be surprised when Phillips removed his mask and proposed. Although they have not settled on a wedding date as yet, Phillips said it was one of the most exciting days in their lives and thanked his and Pillay’s family and friends for joining in the surprise.
