Pietermaritzburg - A Pietermaritzburg student will lead a team of four other representatives from around the country to this year’s prestigious Y20 summit in China.

A PhD candidate at Pietermaritzburg’s University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) campus, Muhammed Bilaal Ismail (27) said it was an “ecstatic feeling” to not only be selected from thousands of applicants to attend the Y20 summit, but also to lead the delegation from South Africa.

The Y20 is an official platform for the youth from countries around the world to engage in discussions on the most pressing global challenges and generate innovative solutions for consideration.

During the youth summit, delegates participate in conferences and workshops with high-profile speakers and recognized experts discussing topics such as food security, poverty, sustainable development and global finance.

Ismail, a Maritzburg College old boy, whose research incorporates the study of inorganic compounds for their potential use in medicine, already has a host of accolades to his name.

He is currently a graduate adviser for the Golden Key International Honour Society at UKZN and was selected as one of only two students from Africa to attend an advanced course at the University of Edinburgh in 2012.

Although Ismail is formally a scientist, he said he is passionate about learning and applying “multidisciplinary, innovative knowledge for the holistic development of others”.

The summit will take place in Shanghai and Beijing in July.
