Cape Town – Western Cape police arrested a 52-year-old man following the killing of a man at a taxi rank in Philippi East in Cape Town on Friday afternoon.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said a "swift response" by the police led to the suspect's arrest.

"He was wearing a taxi association reflector jacket. SAPS members were deployed to the area and shortly afterwards, the suspect, a 52-year-old man was arrested," said Traut.

"His 9mm firearm - with eight rounds - was confiscated. He is expected to make a court appearance on Monday to face a charge of murder."

Traut said Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised police members for reacting "so quickly to the murder".

Traut warned that police would remain on "high alert to quell the taxi violence in the province".

On Thursday morning, two minibus taxi drivers were killed and nine other people between the ages of 15 and 45, were injured in Langa.

The provincial taxi task team arrested a 51-year-old man – who has links to the taxi industry – in the early hours of Friday morning over the incident.
