Police arrest suspects and recover items stolen from a school

Two suspects have been arrested for allegedly robbing a school.

The men, who have since made their first appearance in the Hoopstad Magistrates Court on Friday, were arrested on Wednesday evening.

They are expected back in court on Friday.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said the suspects were arrested by a team of investigators from Welkom and Hoopstad.

It is alleged that on January 28, the suspects entered into Tikwana Secondary School and stole items worth R100 000. Hours later, police received a tip-off about the whereabouts of the suspects and stolen items.

Thakeng said police them followed up that information which led them to a house in Tikwana township. Police found the suspect inside the house and recovered the stolen items.

He said following several complaints of burglaries in schools in the area, police have formed a Welkom Cluster Task Team to deal with the burglaries.

Welkom cluster commander Major General Lerato Molale said there has been a spate of robberies and burglaries taking place in the area. 

Molale regarded the arrest and seizure of the stolen items as a breakthrough
