Durban - Police search and rescue divers have pulled the body of a fisherman from the surf at Virginia Beach, a police spokesperson said on Friday.

The 40-year-old fisherman fell off the Virginia beach pier in central Durban in the early hours of Thursday morning, apparently while drunk, and disappeared beneath the waves, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said.

The police search and rescue unit was called to the pier after the Air Traffic Control tower spotted the body in the surf. It was recovered later that morning.

"His family have identified him as Neville Dolandes," she said.
