Port Alfred - An alleged housebreaking repeat offender is back behind bars thanks to a quick-thinking policeman and his dog Bonzo.

Warrant Officer Tertius Neethling and Bonzo, as well as Constable Mkhululi Lamani and his dog Ounooi, were called to the scene of a housebreaking in Kenton-On-Sea near Port Alfred on Friday night.

"The team searched the area around the house that had been cordoned off by Hi-Tec [Security]. Warrant officer Neethling noticed a man running out of the bush down the street. With the assistance of Bonzo, they managed to catch the suspect," said Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula.

The suspect, Thembalethu Mxokozeli, was found in possession of a sharpened screwdriver and some stolen items.

"The stolen goods, which included a DVD player and a bag of clothes, were handed back to the owner," said Mjekula.

Police found out later that Mxokozeli was out on parole for housebreaking.

He appeared in the Alexandria Magistrate's Court on Monday when his case was postponed to December 3.
