Johannesburg - A Polokwane man who was kidnapped by an unknown number of suspects in Maake, Tzaneen, has been found dead with gun shot wounds, Limpopo police said on Friday.

On Thursday evening, 68-year-old Johannes Mathipa was traveling with the unknown woman in his Toyota Hilux in a village outside Tzaneen, Polokwane when they were allegedly kidnapped by the suspects, spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said earlier on Friday.

The man's family alerted police when he failed to return from work and was not answering his phone.

A swift search in and around the area was conducted.

"In the process, the victim's vehicle was found parked alongside the road with nobody inside, but it was [tampered] with, indicating that force was used," Ngoepe said.

Women's clothing, a pair of black takkies and a shoe believed to be the 68-year-old man's were found on the passenger seat, said police in a statement.

Ngoepe told News24 that the challenge was finding out the identity and age of the woman he was with when they were both kidnapped by the suspects. He told News24 that police could not rule out the possibility of the two having intimate relations.

In an update later on Friday afternoon, Ngoepe confirmed that the the man's body was found in the bushes a distance away from where the vehicle was earlier recovered but the unknown womam was still missing.
