Johannesburg - Police have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects allegedly involved in the shooting of a police officer in Pienaarspoort railway station.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the group consists of eight men who in the early hours of Tuesday morning shot and wounded an officer during a robbery.

"The suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of money."

He said the incident happened while police from Mamelodi East were on a routine patrol near the railway station.

"As they were observing a group of suspicious people who were at the railway station at about 02:00, the group suddenly opened fire on them. A shoot-out then ensued and the suspects fled the scene in unknown vehicles."

The wounded police officer was taken to the local hospital. He is in a stable condition, he said.

"On further investigation it was established that the suspects had tied up the guards before stealing undisclosed amount of money from the safe. The guards were not injured."

"Any information that may lead to the arrest of these suspects will be rewarded," Dlamini said.
