Durban – Police have been deployed to Umlazi's Glebelands hostel after a man was shot and killed there on Tuesday night, KwaZulu-Natal's safety and liaison department said on Wednesday.

MEC Willies Mchunu called for calm in the area after Mduduzi Qwabe, 46, was killed while entering the hostel.

"Police have quickly moved in to ensure visibility and to enforce law and order in the hostel and surroundings. Police are investigating the latest killing."

Mchunu said he had received reports of efforts to destabilise the hostel, allegedly by people collecting money and threatening residents with violence.

"The callous murder of Qwabe is strongly condemned. We have made tremendous progress in stabilising the Glebelands hostel and anything that seeks to take us backward is unacceptable."

Mchunu said most of the cases reported were before the courts and investigations were continuing. More than 40 people have reportedly been killed at the hostel over the last two years.
