Limpopo - A suspected former soldier in the SANDF has allegedly been found in possession of military grade explosives and ammunition in Makhado, Limpopo.

The Limpopo Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit arrested the suspect on Thursday after intelligence was received about the alleged explosives being kept at the suspect's business premises.

"A disruptive operation was effected and members seized five flare trips, a rifle grenade, two smoke generators, three green signal cartridges, three red signal cartridges, one R1 magazine and five hundred and fifty two [552] R5 ammunition," said Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke.

Maluleke said it is believed that the suspect was once a soldier in the South African National Defence Force and that they would be investigating to find the origin of all the contraband found.

The Hawks at this point cannot speculate on what the explosives and ammunition were intended for, but said this will form part of their investigations.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Makhado Magistrate Court on Monday.
