Johannesburg – Police have arrested an alleged hitman after a double murder attempt on Tuesday.

Johannesburg police in conjunction with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department arrested the 30-year-old suspect after he was seen running from the scene at China Multiplex SM Cellular Mayfair where a shop owner and customer were shot.

According to police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele, it is believed that the man entered the shop pretending to be a customer.

"He pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at the owner. The owner was shot once in the upper body and a female customer twice in the lower and upper body," Mbele said.

Both victims were taken to hospital.

Police officers who were in the area heard the gunshots and ran to the scene where they saw a man running away carrying a firearm.

They chased him down and arrested him.

A firearm with no serial number was recovered.

Mbele said it is believed that the man had two accomplices who escaped in a silver-grey BMW.

An investigation into the incident is still under way.

The suspect is due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon.
