Johannesburg - A police officer was shot dead and two others were wounded in separate incidents in Johannesburg, police said on Friday.

The officer was killed and his colleague wounded during a business robbery at Shoprite and Shoprite liquor in the Meadowlands Mall, Soweto, on Thursday evening, Captain Kay Makhubela said.

When the robbers ran out of the shop, they fired at the officers before fleeing the scene.

Police were investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, and business robbery.

The second officer was wounded during a shoot-out with two men who hijacked a Mercedes-Benz in Turffontein. They followed the two men to Zonkizizwe, on the East Rand, on Thursday evening.

The shoot-out occurred when police tried to stop the hijacked car. One officer and one of the hijackers were wounded. His accomplice ran away.

The police officer was in a stable condition in hospital. The suspect was under police guard.

Cases of attempted murder and possession of a hijacked vehicle were opened.
