Police portfolio committee welcomes new crime fighting units

2016-02-18 17:28

Parliament- The police portfolio committee on Thursday welcomed President Jacob Zuma's announcement of the establishment of two units to fight drugs and illegal firearms.

Portfolio chairperson Francois Beukman said the units, which would fall under the Hawks, would go a long way in fighting organised crime.

This was in keeping with the kind of the police service and crime-fighting envisaged in the National Development Plan, Beukman said.

"As part of the back-to-basics strategy, the ministry of police will establish special units to deal with drugs and related transgressions and transnational crimes, as well as violence and proliferation of firearms in our society," Zuma said during his reply to the State of the Nation Address debate.
