Johannesburg - Police are investigating whether there was any negligence on the part of police officers in Springs after six men managed to escape from the police cells.

"If anyone is found to have been negligent, a criminal case for aiding the prisoners to escape will be registered and disciplinary steps may also follow," Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

A manhunt was launched after the six men escaped from police cells in Springs on Sunday night around 21:00.

"The escapees allegedly overpowered a police officer at the cell," Dlamini said.

"As they were trying to strangle him, they took the cell keys, opened the cell door and escaped out of the police station. An attempt to apprehend them failed as they ran into different directions."

He said the men were believed to still be in the East Rand area.

They were due to appear in the Springs Magistrate's Court on various charges which included murder, possession of drugs, theft of copper cables and malicious damage to property.

Members of the public were warned not to approach the group as they were considered dangerous.
