Pietermaritzburg - Two men who were allegedly part of a car theft and housebreaking gang involved in a shoot-out with police in Montrose at the weekend are facing multiple counts of attempted murder of policemen as well as the attempted theft of a motor vehicle.

The two men — who are named in the state’s charge sheet as Derrick Williams and Sbongiseni Morikeng — were not present in court yesterday as they were wounded in the shoot-out and were still in hospital, Magistrate M. Boikhutso was told. The men are charged with attempting to steal a Peugeot 206 from the Keg and Hedgehog in Townbush Road on April 30. They are also charged with attempted murder of police officers Kreason Kander, Farhaad Ismael, Imran Shaik, and Reeno Dayaram.

In addition they face charges of unlawful possession of three firearms — a CZ 9 mm pistol, a Beretta 9 mm and a 9 mm FN as well as 36 rounds of ammunition. The case was postponed in their absence to May 5.

The Witness reported on Monday that police were involved in a shoot-out with an allegedly notorious criminal gang in the early hours of Saturday. Police said the six-man gang may be linked to between 80 and 100 cases of housebreaking, business robbery and car theft in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding towns in the Midlands since January. The alleged ringleader, Ian Williams, was shot dead during the dramatic shoot-out.
