Cape Town – A policeman is in a serious condition after he was stabbed while fishing at Monwabisi Beach in Cape Town.

Jacques Joubert was still in ICU after the attack on Thursday morning, his wife Monica confirmed to News24 on Friday.

She declined to comment further, saying it was a sensitive matter.

Joubert, 38, a sergeant, was off duty when two unidentified assailants approached him, said Captain FC van Wyk.

Anglers responded with outrage to a post, describing the attack on the Cape Town Rock & Surf Fishing Facebook page.

The post stated that Joubert always assisted anglers in need.

Known by many as "Monwabisi Cop", he apparently went out of his way to patrol the beaches, whether on or off duty.

Many attested to his friendliness and wished him a speedy recovery.

A photo of a knife and a BB gun, alleged to have been used during the attack, were added to the post.

A number of fishermen also shared their concerns at increased attacks on the beach, and the need to defend themselves.

Joubert's wife commented on the page on Thursday that he was stabbed once, resulting in a punctured lung. She said they had stopped internal bleeding and that he was out of immediate danger.

Van Wyk said they were investigating cases of attempted robbery and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

No arrests had yet been made.
