Cape Town - A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death of an 11-year-old girl whose body was found in the home of a relative in Paarl, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

Shamonique Claasen was found under a bed, wrapped in a blanket, on Monday evening, Captain FC van Wyk said.

Her mother reported her missing at the Paarl East police station on Sunday. Police and her relatives had failed to find her during a search that day.

A family member "picked up a smell" in their home the next day and found her body.

A 23-year-old suspect was taken in for questioning, Van Wyk said.
