Johannesburg – The body of a 40-year-old driver, who was swept down a river in Pretoria on Thursday, has been found just over a metre from his car.

Leon Strydom, a father of two, was found in the river in Honingnestkrans, north of Pretoria, around 12:00 on Friday by police divers, Captain Riana van Aarde said.

"After we pulled out the empty car, the rescue team continued to search for the body," she said.

Strydom went missing when his blue Nissan Micra was swept away on Thursday morning. He was on his way to work at the time.

A farmer living in the area called emergency services when he saw the car in the water with one occupant inside around 06:00.

Heavy rains since Wednesday had caused flooding in parts of Gauteng. The northern parts of Pretoria were the most affected.
