Pretoria - After going several years without any chimpanzees, the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria is now home to two of the primates, named Moti and Abshalom.

Spokesperson Craig Allenby said the male chimps arrived late last year from the Ramat Gan Zoo in Tel Aviv and the Tisch Family Zoo in Jerusalem, Israel.

"The two adapted well to their new environment at the zoo’s animal hospital’s quarantine facility, as well as to each other – they did not know each other at all due to being from different zoos," he said.

On Thursday, the animals were taken to their new enclosure after the quarantine period was successfully completed.

"The zoo had not had chimps for a number of years and has heeded the requests from its visitors to once again [house]... these charismatic primates," he said.

The primates were darted and final tests conducted before they were taken to their enclosure opposite that of the Cape vulture.

Animal lovers, however, will not be able to view the animals just yet.

"Visitors to the zoo will not be able to view Moti or Abshalom for a while but will be able to monitor the introduction process on CCTV cameras that have been installed in the enclosure," Allenby said.

"A video along with other educational resources have also been installed at the viewing area of the enclosure where our visitors can get some information on the progress of the introduction."
