Cape Town - A Cape Town Municipal Court prosecutor, who allegedly tried to knock a traffic officer off this motorcycle after being flagged down for reckless driving, was expected to appear in court on Monday.

He will face charges of drunk driving, reckless and negligent driving, and attempted murder, The City of Cape Town said in a statement.

"The suspect was spotted driving erratically along the R300 on Saturday evening, but when a City of Cape Town traffic officer tried to pull him over, he tried to ram the officer off his motorcycle," mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said.

"He was eventually arrested and at the police station it emerged that he has four previous drunk driving cases against him, as well as a conviction for possession of drugs."

Smith said they would oppose bail, and that he has also requested that the city engage with the National Prosecuting Authority about removing the suspect from duty.

The city's traffic service arrested eight more suspects on various charges, including reckless and negligent driving, drunk driving and providing false information. They also issued 1 298 fines.

Meanwhile, officers attached to Operation Reclaim patrolled the Bellville area on the lookout for a specific vehicle after noticing that a large number of fines had accrued in the area.

They traced the vehicle and arrested the driver for 88 outstanding warrants totalling R70 700, the statement said. The suspect will appear in the Parow Municipal Court on Tuesday.

The city's Metro Police Department, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, apprehended 14 suspects for possession of drugs over the weekend.

This includes six suspects who were arrested for possession of dagga during an operation in the Somerset West central business district.

A total of 40 motorists were arrested for drunk driving during static and roaming vehicle checks in a number of areas, including Rondebosch, Manenberg, Mowbray and Ravensmead.

Metro Police also arrested one suspect for theft of a firearm and three others for theft of municipal property.
