Fire and rescue officials were unable to reach a burning municipal vehicle on NY1 and Govan Mbeki Road in Cape Town on Friday morning due to protests.

"Officials were unable to extinguish the fire due to the volatility of protesters in the area," said City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokesperson Theo Layne.

According to City of Cape Town traffic spokesperson Richard Coleman, there was also protest action in Govan Mbeki and Duinefontein Roads.

"This led to Duinefontein being closed between The Downs and Old Landsdowne Road in both directions. We also have Govan Mbeki closed and Vygekraal Road."

Coleman added that Hawston Road from Fisherhaven was closed. The Hawston community is believed to also be protesting in the area.
