Mbombela - The Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Monday declined to respond to Transport Minister Dipuo Peters's concerns that it had no road safety programmes for its players.

Peters said this following the arrest of an Orlando Pirates’ player for allegedly speeding at 173km/h in Johannesburg over the Easter weekend.

"We won’t engage the minister in the media. No, we won’t do it. We won’t get involved," PSL spokesperson Luxolo September said on Monday.

Asked whether the PSL had initiatives to educate soccer players about road safety, September said: "We will not talk about this because anything we say is going to be a response to the minister."

Meanwhile, during a road safety operation on the R71 in Tzaneen on Saturday, Peters told a News24 correspondent she was disappointed with people who broke the rules of the road.

"I can tell you that I am very disappointed. People were travelling to church not wearing their seatbelts and many of them were saying they did not know that they should wear the seatbelts."
