Public hearings into proposed name changes in the Nelson Mandela Bay Local Municipality are expected to kick off on Tuesday. This is according to the Eastern Cape's Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture's cultural body, the Eastern Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee (ECPGNC). The hearings are scheduled until November 21. "The ECPGNC has received applications for proposed renaming, conducted research on the names and facilitated a consultative process with the local community concerned, business, faith organisations, and other stakeholders in the jurisdiction of the place to be renamed", spokesperson Andile Nduna said in a statement.Nduna said the department was at a stage where details of reasons for the proposed standardisation would be presented. He said any objections to the names would also be sent to the ECPGNC's objections subcommittee for a response. However, if consensus on the new name is reached among all relevant stakeholders, the committee will make recommendations to the national South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC), said Nduna.
