Cape Town – The committee tasked with finding a replacement for Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will on Thursday deliberate on the suitability of the 14 candidates vying for the job.

The committee, chaired by ANC MP Makhosi Khoza, hoped to whittle the number of candidates down to five.

MPs interviewed the candidates in a marathon session in Parliament last Thursday. Several skeletons were unearthed, including drunk driving allegations, cellphone theft accusations, and charges of illegally selling of liquor.

Once the five had been chosen, the committee would schedule another meeting to select the ultimate candidate. Madonsela's seven-year term ends in October.

"We would not be doing justice to the process if we want to reflect on all the 14 candidates tomorrow and at the same time want rush to choose the preferred candidate by tomorrow already," Khoza said on Wednesday.

The committee has until August 31 to recommend a candidate to the National Assembly.
