Mbombela - An ANC councillor is set to appear in the Boschfontein Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga, after allegedly wounding a pupil during a protest.

Justice Siboza, 55, who was arrested on Monday, is facing a charge of attempted murder, Netwerk24 reported.

The 16-year old pupil at Mpumelelo Primary School in Middelplaas was shot during a protest on Friday by pupils and parents, after a child fell into a pit toilet. The pupil was rescued.

Incensed protesters demanded safe and hygienic ablution facilities at the school.

"According to reports, the ANC member arrived at the school with law enforcement officials. He fired three shots with his own firearm. He claimed it was in an attempt to calm down the protesting parents," said Jane Sithole, DA spokesperson for education in Mpumalanga.

She said Reginah Mhaule, the province's MEC for education in Mpumalanga, seems to have forgotten about her promise of safe and hygienic ablution facilities for schools in Nkomazi.

"It seems as if she is waiting for a pupil to die before she acts."

The provincial Department of Education couldn't be reached for comment.
