Pretoria – Screaming and her car hooter saved the life of an elderly Pretoria woman when two suspected robbers broke into her house, police said on Wednesday.

The 74-year-old Bailey's Muckleneuk woman was in her living room when she saw two men trying to open her sliding door with a screwdriver on Friday evening.

“She ran to the garage where she locked herself in. She then screamed and used the hooter of her vehicle to scare the burglars away,” said Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.

They damaged a television screen in an attempt to steal it, but fled empty-handed.

Weilbach said staying calm and focused in an emergency could save lives.
