The community of Boikhutsong near Ventersdorp has brought the R30 between the town and Rustenburg to a standstill.

This after they barricaded the road as early as 05:30 on Thursday, the police said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Pelonomi Makau said the road remained closed and officers were at the scene to monitor the situation.

Makau said protesters had earlier in the morning thrown stones at vehicles that were travelling on the road.

"It is alleged that the community wants delegates from the department of education to come and speak with them and resolve their demands about their schools there," she said.

Makau said it was unclear what the exact problem was, but police were told that the community is demanding schools and school transport.

News24 tried unsuccessfully to contact the North West education department to understand what the impasse was regarding schools.

Once reached, comment from the department's spokesperson will be added to the story.

Makau said no arrests had been made and there was no damage to property.

"The road is still closed for traffic and the police are there along with traffic department to divert motor vehicles to use alternative routes," she said.
