Free State - Two Northern Cape police officers have been released on bail after they were arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a colleague, provincial authorities have confirmed.

Spokesperson Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba on Thursday said the two constables had "not yet" been suspended.

The officers, aged 25 and 26, whose names are known to News24, were arrested on Wednesday by the Calvinia Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Niewoudtville.

Both suspects and the complainant are attached to the Niewoudtville police station.

"It is alleged the two sexually assaulted a 22-year-old female police constable on February 22, 2018, in a police vehicle," Ramatseba said.

Both appeared in the Calvinia Magistrate's Court on Wednesday and released on R300 bail each.

The case was postponed to March 20 for further investigation.

"The provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape SAPS, Lieutenant General Risimati Shivuri, has strongly condemned the [alleged] action of the members. He reiterated that the suspects will face the full might of the law," Ramatseba said.
