Durban - Thieves reportedly stole R400 000 from the Umbilo licensing department after spending hours cutting open the safe on Sunday night.

"At this point, we think that the guard was overpowered and tied up while the men set to work cutting open the safe which had R400 000 inside. He has reported he heard several voices while this was all going on," said a police source who could not be named.

The money was from licence fees. The thieves also stole all the computers, crippling the centre. It would be closed until further notice, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said on Monday.

"It is quite disturbing to note the extent of the greed and audacity of the thieves, who show no care about plundering the services of the nation," Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said in a statement.

People could use other licensing stations, including Pinetown, in the meantime. Mchunu called on anyone with information about the break-in to contact the police.
