Ermelo - A Mozambican man arrested in Mpumalanga with heroin with an estimated street value of R52 million is expected to apply for bail next week.

Ibraimo Candeiro was not asked to plead to a charge of illegal possession of drugs when he appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

He was arrested between Chrissiesmeer and Ermelo on Monday, Hawks provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Dineo Sekgotodi told a News24 correspondent.

Police arrested him after stopping and searching his car. The heroin was found hidden in an extra fuel tank and the spare wheel.

He had come from Mozambique via Swaziland and was heading for Johannesburg.

Sekgoti said the heroin weighed about 52kg.

Candeiro's case was postponed to May 10.
