Johannesburg - A Lebanese man was caught in possession of gold bars worth about R7m, at OR Tambo International Airport, the SA Revenue Service said on Monday.

The man was en route to Dubai when customs officials found 17 bars and three discs of gold in his black leather bag on Sunday, spokesperson Sandile Memela said.

The man was allegedly trying to leave the country without proper documentation and allegedly had self-generated invoices, Memela said.

He was handed over to police.

With the price of gold currently around R630 800/kg, he would have been carrying about 11kg.
