Johannesburg - Since the start of January, the weather has played some strange tricks on South Africa, with record high temperatures followed by heavy rainfall in some areas.

But has the much-welcomed rain been enough to break the drought?

According to Musa Mkhwanazi of WeatherSA, the answer is not what most people would like to hear.

"This drought accumulated over months and it can’t be addressed by few weeks of rainfall," said.

"It might be enough for someone who needs water for their garden, but when looking at things like water level for dams and rivers, we still need lots of rainfall to overcome this crisis."

From January 1 to 10, the largest parts of the country, especially the Northern Cape, received no more than between 0 and 10mm of rainfall.

From January 11 to 20, the clouds started gathering and most areas, including the Northern Cape, received between 10 and 50mm of rain.

North West was a little luckier, getting between 50 and 100mm of rain during this period.
