Pietermaritzburg - Upon hearing that he will spend the next 17 years in jail, a rapist fled from a Pietermaritzburg court on Tuesday — but his freedom was short-lived.

The man was tackled and brought down by a police dog a few kilometres from the court shortly after his escape and is now being treated at the Northdale Hospital for bite wounds.

At about 11:00 on Tuesday, Sifiso Mdunge, 24, appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Sexual Offences Court on a rape charge.

Having been found guilty of raping a 6-year-old girl in the Dalton area in 2014 he was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment.

Soon after the magistrate, Bessie Du Preez, announced the sentence and told Mdunge to stand to one side, he took his chance.

The Witness was told Mdunge made a run for it when a court orderly on duty was briefly distracted.

Witnesses said the orderly was busy dealing with a member of the public whose cellphone rang in court when Mdunge bolted out of the court, down a short passageway and out through the entrance, taking security guards by surprise.

A female security guard tried in vain to catch him but he pushed her aside and raced past her.

No one was injured in the fracas.

Police swiftly circulated a description of Mdunge over their radios.

According to a police source, members of the Pietermaritzburg K9 unit questioned a woman near Stranack Street in the CBD who told them she saw a man matching the description behind her premises.

As police neared, it is believed Mdunge made a run for it, diving over backyard fences to escape police dogs that were hot on his heels.

Mdunge was eventually tackled by a police dog on Boom Street near ARB Electrical Wholesalers.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said Mdunge will be charged for escaping from lawful custody.
