Cape Town – Mystery surrounds the single red distress flare seen near Cape Point in the early hours of Monday morning.

Two yachts and a vessel confirmed sighting the flare, approximately 13 nautical miles south-east of Cape Point at 00:23, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

NSRI Simon’s Town duty crew got a call from Transnet National Ports Authority about the flare.

One of the yachts and the vessel diverted to investigate and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre asked them to begin a search.

The search yielded nothing and the NSRI returned to base at 04:30.Vessels in the vicinity were however asked to remain vigilant.

The NSRI’s Air Sea Rescue started a search at 10:00, with the help of an air force helicopter and emergency services.

“A search pattern was flown over the vicinity of the original flare sighting and covering an extensive area, but no sign of any vessel in distress has been found and no reports of any vessels overdue or missing have been reported, and the flare activation last night remains a mystery.”
