Johannesburg - Western Cape emergency rescue services were struggling to reach a hiker who went missing in Mitchell's Pass, near Ceres, early on Wednesday evening.

Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) spokesperson Johann Marais said the organisation was notified around 17:00.

"There was a report of a missing hiker by the people who had gone with him into the mountain. [Rescue services] were alerted, an EMS helicopter was dispatched which found the hiker, but could not reach him."

Marais said a request was sent for authorisation to use an Oryx helicopter. These helicopters are used by the SA Air Force.

"It's much stronger and can fly much higher," Marais said.

The hiking group had alerted the Mountain Club of SA, which then notified the emergency services, which in turn informed the WSAR.
