Johannesburg – Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula will on Tuesday welcome South Africa’s Paralympic team back from Rio de Janeiro.

Team South Africa won 17 medals - seven gold, six silver, and four bronze - at the 2016 Paralympic Games and came 22nd on the medals table.

The team is expected to land at OR Tambo International Airport at 07:30.

In a statement released by the Presidency on September 11, President Jacob Zuma hailed gold medallists Kevin Paul for his performance in the men's 100m breaststroke, and Paul Langenhoven for his performance in the long jump.

Tennis sensation Lucas Sithole reached the semi-finals of the quad singles by beating Brazilian Ymanitu Silva. He however missed out on the bronze by losing to the US’s David Wagner.

Ernst van Dyk won the cycling road race.

Ilse Hayes won silver in the T13 100m and 400m races.
