Cape Town - Family and friends have been rallying around Rivonia Trialist Denis Goldberg after he was admitted to hospital for treatment for lung cancer.

"I am hopeful that in some time to come my doctors will be able to treat [it]. Yesterday they said there is a possibility and that I can withstand the treatment," he told News24 on Friday.

The struggle stalwart was admitted to the Constantiaberg Hospital in Cape Town last Monday.

His son, David, who travelled from the UK to be with his father, said doctors have told them that the cancerous lump is inoperable.

"He is dealing with it all. He is hopeful that treatment is possible," David said.

"There is nothing to improve until they decide whether chemotherapy can start. It can’t be cut out."

David said family and friends had been to see his father, who could only manage short visits.

Goldberg was one of 10 who faced charges of treason in 1963 after a raid on Liliesleaf Farm. He was found guilty on the charges, including conspiracy and sabotage, during the infamous Rivonia Trial held at the Palace of Justice in Pretoria in 1963.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment but was released in 1985.
