Pietermaritzburg - A raging gunbattle broke out when armed robbers attempted to break into the house of a high-ranking Pietermaritzburg police officer on Wednesday night.

One of the robbers, who is suspected to be part of a wanted housebreaking syndicate operating in the Alexandra policing precinct, was shot dead in the commotion.

It is believed at about 9.30 pm on Wednesday, three robbers hopped over the officer’s fence and entered his yard in Ernest Tooth Road.

As the trio were approaching the window, it is believed they startled the officer’s son who alerted his father to the intruders.

When the police captain walked out the door to see what was happening in his yard, one of the robbers allegedly opened fire on him.

The officer allegedly retaliated and returned fire, sending the robbers fleeing over the fence.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said as the robbers fled over the gate, they were shooting in the direction of the officer.

Two of the men managed to scale the gate but the third, who was shot in the arm, chest and head, succumbed to his injuries and was found dead on the driveway.

The pair sped off in a white Nissan Sentra. No arrests have been made.
