Pretoria - An armed robber escaped after shooting and killing his accomplice and injuring a security guard during an attempted heist in Moreleta Park, Pretoria, early on Friday morning, police said.

The duo allegedly tried to rob a business at the corner of Wekker Road and De Villebois Mareuil Drive around 04:00, Captain Kay Makhubela said.

The robbers entered the building and shot at the security guard. One of the armed men managed to hit his accomplice in the process.

"The man was shot and killed. He has not yet been identified."

The security guard sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the man had already died when they arrived at the scene. The security guard was stabilised and taken to hospital.

Cases of murder, attempted murder, and attempted robbery were being investigated, Makhubela said.
