Roedean School in Johannesburg has confirmed the suspension of its school head, Murray Thomas, but has declined to say why.

"The suspension process of the Executive Head of Roedean School has not been taken lightly by the Roedean Board," board chairperson Audrey Mothupi said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The board is committed to ensuring that the process is fair for all parties, that it is dealt with swiftly, and that the outcome is communicated to the school community."

The board has appointed Fiona Rogers as the acting executive head while the matter is under investigation.

"Mrs Rogers has been at Roedean for 14 years, 11 of those on the executive team. She has the full support of the board," Mothupi added.

Although the reasons behind Thomas' suspension are yet to be given, TimesLive reported that the suspension was not linked to the Tshidi Mogodiri saga in 2018.

The school re-employed Mogodiri a day after she announced she would be leaving the school.

This was followed by an apology by Thomas for an incident which took place within the same week during a school assembly, where he reportedly said a black pupil's poem about the mispronunciation of names was offensive.

Mothupi said stating the reasons for the suspension would be pre-empting the investigation.
